As we move into Spring and prepare for the next solar eclipse, I want to reflect for a moment on our connection to nature.
The ultimate reciprocity is the relationship between humans and plants, the exchange of CO2 and oxygen. There is a never ending gift provided from nature to humans so that we may have the benefit of breath. And yet, this is a gift often taken for granted and often not appreciated.
Many cultures and religious traditions center Mother Earth and nature as a source of connection to spirit. Some communities make decisions centering the value of caring for seven future generations. In businesses, we are taught to create mutually beneficial partnerships in the community.
Trees and plants give us breath. Trees provide shade and shelter. Trees provide resources for paper and wood. Trees provide food. Trees enrich the soil. And, on and on. Trees give unconditionally. Read the book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.
Trees teach us to ground ourselves daily and reach for the sky for strength. As you go through today, the coming eclipse and the month ahead, look to the trees around you for guidance with gratitude and an open heart.
Spend time daily in the yoga tree pose, or simply stand with your eyes closed for a minute or two every day and imagine yourself as a tree.
Stand tall with your feet slightly apart, or imagine yourself doing this. Feel roots taking hold from your feet and imagine them going deeper and deeper to the center of the Earth. Feel the connection to the Earth and imagine minerals, sustenance and strength flowing into your body.
Now, lift your hands above your head or in front of your body in prayer position. Imagine your arms as branches and your body as a tree trunk and imagine many more branches reaching up to the sky from your body, filling in with leaves. Feel the warmth of the sunshine and tap into the feeling of the leaves absorbing sunshine. Imagine a pillar of light between your body and the sun, filling your body with energy and light. Soak it in and say thank you.
May you be grateful for the trees and plants in your surroundings. May you gain strength, appreciation and grounding from your tree exercises.
The Weeping Willow
The weeping willow touching the ground
To one looking sad and lonely
To another filled with joy and compassion
For the willow touches the ground for all to enjoy the leaves
For the willow forms a shelter for those below the branches
For the willow dances in the breeze.
What do you see?
